KONA - SF
Age: ~ 2 Years Old
Weight: 28 lbs
Breed: Copper-Coated Cuddlehound
Meet Kona, a truly special dog who deserved better. Kona originally found her home in May of 2024, and after a year and a half, we received an urgent email demanding her immediate return. The reasons given did not align, did not hold up once we spoke with the professionals involved in her care, and, most importantly, did not reflect the dog we now see in front of us. This surrender has been difficult because the picture her owners painted was so dramatically different from the reality.
We requested additional information from them to ensure we could set Kona up for success, as returning a dog to a kennel environment can be stressful, but the more we learned, the clearer it became that Kona was simply not receiving what she needed at home.
Her owners claimed Kona had an extreme prey drive toward their elderly cat, yet in our care she has been appropriate with our shelter cats. While she’s curious at times, she’s been respectful and easily redirected. Although her owners said they were engaged in ongoing in-home training, the trainer they referenced told us they had not worked with Kona in over a year and had only positive things to say about her. The trainer informed us that they felt her behavior was entirely manageable with normal structure and supervision and described her as highly trainable and believed her challenges were completely manageable with follow-through. When we asked the owners for training records to better understand Kona’s behavior, they questioned why we needed them, which further emphasized the disconnect between what we were being told and what was actually happening.
We were also told that her veterinarian recommended sedation, a statement that raised serious concerns; nothing we have observed indicates that Kona requires medication to function. Instead, it appears her mental and physical needs were not being met consistently. Though they told us she attended daycare regularly and had a rigorous exercise schedule, their claim fell apart when the facility confirmed she had not been there in a year.
They shared that they recently had a baby and that Kona’s needs exceeded what they could sustainably manage. While this is understandable, misrepresenting her behavior only harms the dog, and unfortunately, Kona is the one paying for that lack of transparency. The reality is that she is not the dog her owners described. She is not “out of control,” nor is she unsafe. She is a good dog who was not given the structure, outlets, or guidance she needed.
Kona remains the same dog we knew when she first arrived: sweet, affectionate, playful, and eager to bond. She has done well with other dogs and would thrive with an active person or family. If you’re a hiker, runner, or someone who enjoys an energetic companion, Kona would be a dream for you. She knows sit, down, wait, and place, is crate and house trained, and has a strong recall. While she could use some polishing on leash manners and may jump when excited, these are common, manageable behaviors in a home willing to provide consistency and training. Her size makes her easy to bring along for life’s adventures, and she loves car rides. She also has the most endearing submissive smile that tells you everything about her gentle heart.
We want to be clear: surrendering a dog can be the right decision when circumstances truly change. But when a dog is misrepresented, when key details are exaggerated or withheld, rescues lose the ability to make informed decisions, and the dog ultimately suffers. Kona deserved honesty, structure, and commitment. She did not receive that, but she has not let it harden her spirit.
Kona has been spayed and is up to date on vaccines and monthly preventatives. She is ready now for the home she was meant for. One where she will be understood, supported, and loved for who she is. If you can offer her the guidance, activity, and affection she thrives on, Kona will reward you with unwavering loyalty and joy. She truly is something special.

BELLA - SF
Age: ~ 2 Years Old
Weight: 75 lbs
Breed: Midnight Moose
Meet Bella! Ready for a boisterous, lovable sweetheart? This beautiful girl was surrendered to us after her previous owner, an avid cat rescuer, realized that Bella avidly despised cats and that it wasn’t worth the risk to keep her.
From the moment Bella arrived at Shultz’s, she instantly won over our volunteers with her sunshine personality. She looks and acts like a classic Labrador: friendly, goofy, exuberant, and absolutely thrilled to meet every person she sees. She’s a big girl with an even bigger heart, always ready to lean in for love or flop over for attention.
Bella is mostly house trained but still working on mastering all the details. She’s learning crate training too and will thrive in a home willing to continue her routines and help her polish her manners.
She’s a high-energy, very active girl who will need an outlet for both her body and her brain. Whether she’s playing fetch, going on adventures, or tumbling around the yard, Bella loves being on the move.
While she lived peacefully with dogs, cats are a definite no-go for this girl.Because of her size and enthusiasm, she would do best in a home with older kids, if any, who are comfortable with a big, bouncy companion.
Bella has been spayed and is up-to-date on her monthly preventatives and vaccines. With structure, consistency, and plenty of love, Bella will blossom into a wonderful, loyal family companion. She already has a fan club here, now she just needs a family of her own.

JOE - NM
Age: ~ 1 Year Old
Weight: 35 lbs
Breed: Wheelin Heelin’ Heelers
Meet Joe! Joe’s story almost ended before he ever had a chance to live it. He and his brother Charlie were threatened with being shot if homes couldn’t be found for them, but rescue stepped in just in time. Today, Joe is safe, loved, and ready to start a brand-new life with a family who will cherish him the way he’s always deserved.
Joe is everything we love about Heelers: athletic, energetic, smart, and full of personality. Outside, he’s a whirlwind of fun. He’s springy, playful, and famously bouncy. Inside, though, he settles beautifully and enjoys being calm and connected with his people.
Despite the rough handling he endured before coming to us, Joe remains unbelievably sweet. A few of his mannerisms suggest he may have been hit in the past, but with gentle reassurance he opens up quickly, showing you his affectionate, goofy side. He’s crate trained, great with other dogs, and eager to bond. Cats are unknown, and because he’s a true working-breed dog, a home without young children is best.
Joe would thrive with an active couple, a herding-breed–experienced owner, or anyone who understands the Heeler brain and loves a dog with energy, smarts, and soul. He’s a lot of dog, but he’s a lot of heart, too.
Joe has been neutered, microchipped, and is up to date on vaccinations and monthly preventatives. Ready to give a big-hearted boy a second chance? Joe can’t wait to bounce his way into your life.

CHARLIE - NM
Age: ~ 1 Year Old
Weight: 33 lbs
Breed: Wheelin Heelin’ Heelers
Meet Charlie! Like his brother, Charlie survived a truly heartbreaking beginning. Their former owner threatened to shoot both dogs if homes couldn’t be found for them, and nothing about their past suggests they were ever treated with kindness. But despite everything, Charlie is still one of the sweetest, most affectionate boys you’ll ever meet.
Charlie is a classic Heeler mix. He’s high-energy outdoors, but remarkably calm and cuddly indoors. He loves adventure, loves people, and loves placing his two little front paws on you as if to say, “Hi, I’m here for hugs.” It’s charming and endearing, and it tells you exactly who he is: a dog who wants to connect.
Some of Charlie’s reactions hint that he may have been handled harshly before, but he responds beautifully to gentle voices and patience. He is crate trained, good with other dogs, and eager to bond with a family who will show him the world isn’t a scary place. Like many Heelers, he’s not the best fit for homes with young children, but he would shine with an active home, experienced working-breed adopters, or anyone ready for a loving, lively, loyal companion.
Charlie has been neutered, microchipped, and is up to date on vaccinations and monthly preventatives. Charlie is energetic, expressive, and wonderfully fun and he has the biggest heart and so much love to give. If you’re ready to help a sweet, deserving boy begin the life he was meant for, Charlie is waiting for you.
