DUSTY - NM ***PENDING ADOPTION!!***
Age: 10+ Years Old
Weight: 14 lbs
Breed: Silver Foxhuahua
Meet Dusty! With the sweetest powdered-sugar snout, this sweet Chihuahua mix is the last dog at our shelter still waiting for his family to walk through the doors and fall in love with him the way we have. Pulled from a hoarding situation where there were 13 other Chihuahua’s, Dusty is at least 10 years old, though we have a sneaking suspicion he may be a bit older than that.
At just 14 lbs, he’s a perfectly portable companion, but he’s equally content being left to his own devices to enjoy quiet time and peaceful naps. While Chihuahuas are often known for their sass, Dusty is truly soft at heart. He communicates his boundaries clearly and politely and we respect him for that.
Dusty has been lucky enough to have spent the last few days in foster care, giving him a much-needed break from shelter life and allowing us to learn more about who he truly is beyond kennel walls. What we’ve learned is simple: Dusty adores his people. He wants nothing more than to be close, to feel safe, and to quietly follow you from room to room like the loyal little shadow he’s meant to be. When left behind, he may let out the softest, sweetest howl. Just a gentle reminder of how ready he is to bond.
Dusty’s favorite things include being wrapped in cozy blankets, being hand-fed (especially cheese sticks), and settling in for long naps. He appeared to be pee pad trained during his time at the shelter, but he is proving that he’s content going outside to do his business as well, though he may mark a bit at first (boys will be boys!).
He’s been enjoying leisurely walks and does well on a leash, but overall he’s a mellow, low-key companion who would thrive in a calm home. He met a much larger dog with ease and paid him little mind, so we believe he could happily coexist in a multi-pet household.
Dusty is looking forward to enjoying a mellow lifestyle filled with soft beds, quiet moments, and lots of love. He’s been neutered, microchipped and is up-to-date on his vaccinations and monthly preventatives.
It’s never easy watching a vulnerable senior wait in a shelter. There’s a sadness in Dusty’s eyes that reminds us how badly he wants to feel safe and cherished. We’re hoping he won’t have to wait long to learn what true kindness and comfort really mean in a home of his own.
